Notes Payable: Definition and Meaning

Definition

Notes payable are formal written promises to repay borrowed money, often including interest and a stated repayment schedule.

Why It Matters

Notes payable help a business track formal lending obligations separately from ordinary vendor payables. The terms of a note may affect cash flow, collateral, covenants, interest expense, current liabilities, and long-term debt reporting.

Businesses should maintain complete loan documents, repayment schedules, and records of interest and principal activity.

Example

A business signs a note with a bank to finance equipment. The note outlines the amount borrowed, interest rate, payment schedule, and other terms.
