On Monday January 27 the IRS began accepting both paper and electronic tax returns. For many it is a relief, they were ready to file when the gates came down, for others it was the beginning of a familiar anxiety. Your tax returns are due on a Wednesday, this April 15. So time is ticking away. Have you gotten started organizing? There is still time but you better get a move on it. The IRS expects to process 150 million individual tax returns, with most of the returns being filed before the due date. Aside from getting it over with and done, filling early will get your refund back faster, and it avoids the danger of having a criminal sending in a bogus return ahead of you. Claiming whatever refund you were supposed to get and leaving you on the hook with an improper return being filed.
So if you have started great – keep going. If you have not started, now would be good. We have a short easy to follow steps to help you do just that, get started. You will be so glad you did and so will your tax preparer.
Get your paperwork in order, it will make filing that much easier and if you have a taxprepayer doing it, then you will help increase the accuracy of your filing and lower your blood pressure. Here is a handy guide from a previous blog on how to prepare.
“As we enter the filing season, taxpayers should know that the dedicated workforce of the IRS stands ready to help,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “We encourage taxpayers to plan ahead and use the tools and information available on IRS.gov. The IRS and the nation’s tax community are committed to making this another smooth filing season.”
If you haven’t gotten started yet, you might want to get it in gear and take the first step of getting organized. Our previous post on getting organized to do your taxes can be found here. We at TYS, LLP are here to do your taxes if they are overwhelming you. But please get started.
